Associate Director – Energy

Role: Associate Director – Energy

Location: Flexibly remote from one of our UK hubs (Bristol, Edinburgh, Harrogate, London, Manchester or Oxford)

Contract: Full-time

Remuneration Range: Competitive

Key responsibilities:

 Project delivery:

  • Coordinating expertise across multi-disciplinary teams to support clients in realising sustainable performance
  • A primary focus on Built Environment – developing our approach to decarbonising buildings and infrastructure, advancing our knowledge sharing and setting appropriate standards.
  • Core subject matter expertise covering embodied carbon, energy management systems, performance in buildings. 
  • Working with clients to develop technical and commercial strategies, producing detailed resourcing and budgetary requirements, supporting the tender process and overseeing the delivery of projects.  
  • Project management including the co-ordination of technical, commercial and procurement advice from internal and external associates. Delivering projects on time and on budget to high customer satisfaction.
  • Advising clients on options, risks and mitigation.
  • Peer review and authorisation of colleagues’ work.

 Relationship Management:

  • Manage multiple client relationships, liaise with clients to determine their requirements, assist clients with on-going enquires. 
  • Develop strategic partnerships with other companies and institutions that enhance the effectiveness of the work we deliver 

 Commercials:

  • Achieving project profitability. Tracking costs, managing and forecasting spend, ensuring that work is kept to budget. Manage resources. Manage invoicing.
  • Providing technical sales support to Sales colleagues ensuring proposals are correctly scoped and priced.
  • Sign-off on design in coordination with Technical Director. Sign-off on reports and models as needed
  • Point of escalation for client enquiries or complaints
  • Supporting Business Development activity – through development of methodologies and supporting commercial structures / pricing

 Strategic

  • Support the development of new propositions, identifying market needs and subsequent opportunities. Spotting innovations and making the business case for pursuing them. 
  • Supporting the development of IP and systems that enhance the quality and efficiency of our client work 

Management

  • The role includes for line management responsibility and representation of the team at the Senior Management level. This includes team appraisals, reviews, and training & development.

Summary of role:

This exciting new role sits within the Energy Practice but has potential to develop into a cross-community endeavour covering circular economy, waste infrastructure and climate adaptation. The Energy Practice has undergone a period of sustained growth over the past few years and now includes for 35 engineering consultants and subject matter experts with a primary focus on the built environment and industry.

To support further growth the Energy Systems team needs to recruit an Associate Director. This is a wide-ranging, senior role developed to transition our clients from strategy and solution development to the programmatic implementation of sustainable performance. Key areas of the role will include, service oversight, mentoring of junior engineers, client management, developing new propositions plus strategic input to the rapid growth of our established team.

Key requirements:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in built environment consulting or client-side, with evidence of delivering transformational change / outcomes

 Knowledge and expertise required:

  • Experience of working in sustainable construction and/or building retrofit. Ideally have knowledge and experience of working in a similar or related role within the sustainability, energy or built environment sector
  • Evidence of coordinating multiple contractors / consultants on behalf of a client to achieve successful outcomes
  • Understanding of and commitment to safety culture and values.
  • Evidence of securing funding for transformational work programmes
  • Experience in dealing with commercial businesses (retailers, manufacturers, etc)

 Skills/competencies required:

  • Understanding of commercial contracts within the built environment and/or renewables sector
  • Experience of line & operational management.

 Qualifications/education level required:

  • Degree in Engineering, Science or Business subject or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Desirable experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the UK / global energy market
  • Experience working with parallel sustainability professions

 Special requirements:

  • As the role includes travel, visiting clients across the UK and on occasions overseas, and keeping in contact with internationally based clients there is a requirement to be flexible around hours of working.
