Role: Senior Carbon Business Developer

Location: Utrecht, The Netherlands (this role will require some travel into the Utrecht office)

Contract: Full-time

Remuneration Range: Competitive

Key responsibilities:

  • Develops and manages strategic relationships in the industry (project developers, traders/wholesalers, trade platforms and financial partners)
  • Sources and contracts new carbon projects
  • Translates a deep understanding of carbon market trends into a sourcing strategy
  • Together with our sales team prepares winning carbon offset propositions for (prospective) clients
  • Expand the international sales via Anthesis’ international offsetting team
  • Further develops the EAC business
  • Responsible for financial structuring of investments into new carbon projects
  • Supports development of strategy for carbon project development
  • Represents Climate Neutral Group externally where relevant
  • Proposing novel and effective ways to structure carbon credit transactions
  • Further develop the due diligence process for new carbon projects
  • Oversee the effective follow-up of transactions

Summary of role:

Purpose and impact driven, based on business economical principles! This drives the Climate Neutral Group and this role is central to our mission.

In the role as Senior Carbon Business Developer you will be responsible for originating, structuring and negotiating deals within the carbon offset and EAC (Energy Attribute Certificate) portfolio for the Climate Neutral Group (CNG).

You will manage a diverse set of external relationships with project developers, trading companies and brokers, and other parties active in the voluntary carbon market. You will find and negotiate the best carbon credits deals in the market, leveraging your network, analytical skills and negotiating skills. You will be responsible for the financial structuring of investments into new projects and support the process to find new strategic or financial partners for CNG’s project development activities. You will liaise with the CNG sales team to structure winning proposals for our end-clients. You will expand the international sales via Anthesis’ international offsetting team. You will actively scan the market for wholesale customers who are interested in buying part of our high-impact project portfolio and for possible tenders in which we can participate. You will further develop the EAC business within CNG/ Anthesis, actively originating opportunities with end-clients.

You will be part of the project portfolio team. This team manages the whole carbon and EAC portfolio of CNG/Anthesis and ensures that we have high-quality projects and a diversified mix of carbon credits and EACs available for our end-clients.

Your skillset includes a high level of commercial acumen, (senior) relationship management and optimization capability.  You have high analytical skills that you use to assess market opportunities. You use your relationship and negotiation skills to maximize the value of each transaction. Sound business judgement, strong initiative and well-defined organizational skills will provide results which will generate significant career growth opportunities within our organization.

The Senior Carbon Business Developer (m/f) reports to the Head of Carbon Trading and Portfolio and is part of the international offsetting team.


Key requirements:

  • University level of thinking
  • Entrepreneurial and proactive mindset, willingness to take initiative
  • Demonstrated belief in and commitment to climate change mitigation and broader sustainability objectives
  • Minimum 7-10 years of commercial experience, preferably in a origination, brokerage or trading role or in a business development role
  • Strong track record in generating new business opportunities, closing deals and meeting customer needs
  • Excellent analytical skills including high level of numeracy and financial literacy
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, clients and team members
  • Experience working on complex offers to clients
  • Legal and contract management skills are a plus
  • Thorough understanding of carbon products and markets
  • Excellent written and oral command of English. Fluency in Dutch and/or Spanish are advantageous
  • Experience working in multi-cultural, international teams is an advantage
  • National, or holder of a valid required work visa in The Netherlands
