Role: Technical Director – Industrial Decarbonisation

Location: Flexibly remote from one of our UK hubs (London, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Harrogate or Oxford).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads client development activities in high-potential and large client relationships. 
  • Maintains a strategic dialogue with clients on value creation opportunities.
  • Articulates and promotes the Activator Agenda and client development best practices.
  • Identifies new client opportunities, grows large and profitable portfolio of client relationships.
  • Writes and negotiates successful proposals and contracts that are material to the business (e.g. large, impactful, replicable, or innovative activations).
  • Independently delivers client’s sustainable performance outcomes through activator journeys and digital solutions.
  • Mentors team members and actively delegates and drives succession planning within client teams.
  • Leads reviews and proactively plans client development activities.
  • Develops and directs sector go-to market strategies
  • Accountable for financial and strategic success for multiple aspects of the business
  • Oversees a large, diverse project portfolio, often directing project managers. Portfolio includes leading edge and innovative scopes of work.
  • Takes active role in developing staff, participates in recruitment, advancement, and termination according to organizational role.
  • Actively creates and maintains networks and proactively markets the company to generate business opportunities/identify sales.
  • Ensures sufficient team competency and tools in area of responsibility to profitably meet market demand.
  • Proactively provides leadership, guidance and standards on technical approaches and quality assurance to solving client challenges (e.g. providing cutting edge, effective, highest-quality work that addresses clients’ needs).
  • Identifies and delivers thought leadership opportunities, including presenting at conferences, on webinars, writing blogs, white papers, and participating in leading forums, etc.
  • Routinely performs senior review on final work product.
  • Technical Leadership of project delivery and project managers: Ensure best practice is in place for the projects delivered in the sector, with project managers and directors being supported, developed and empowered to ensure the projects are successful.
  • Confident to negotiate risk profile of the contract including levels of performance, limitations of liability and reliance
  • Solves unique and complex problems that have a major impact on the business and / or wider industry and the company’s reputation.

Summary of Role:

Provide technical lead and supervision of a number of team engaged in the design of bioenergy and renewable energy related projects and in the delivery of due diligence and decarbonisation studies. Lead the effective utilisation of people, client relationships and resources to deliver against agreed timetables, budgets and business targets.

Key Requirements:

  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience in a relevant position
  • Engineering Degree in or equivalent in one of the following: Chemical, Process, Mechanical, Electrical or Building Facilities. Post-graduate qualification a plus.
  • Chartered status within a relevant Professional Institution
  • Experience winning and delivering energy projects, including managing and directing complex projects to a successful conclusion.
  • Experience developing and implementing business plans, ideally in a consultancy environment and/or in the energy/heat sector.
  • Ensure that Health & Safety is considered as an integral part of any design and construction solution including adherence to statutory and company procedures to identify and mitigate risk and to inform others of any residual hazards.
  • Recognise opportunities for cross-selling within current client contacts and manage commissions to realise these opportunities in consultation with others as appropriate. Ensure that opportunities are maximised within current frameworks and projects.
  • Manage relationships with individual client contacts (internal as well as external) to maximise opportunities across the business whilst providing a high standard of service.
  • Build external reputation through consistent demonstration of professional expertise and behaviour.
  • Provide technical governance on projects to ensure a “technically excellent” solution in accordance with the client’s brief.
  • Work autonomously to translate client briefs and manage members of the team to deliver required projects and outputs from inception to completion.
  • Provide coordinated engineering services input at all project stages.
  • Collaborate and lead other professionals and the team.
  • Act as project sponsor and/or project manager as required, managing the team and liaising with the client.
  • Deep understanding of heat and power generating technologies such as boilers, engines, heat pumps, steam and gas turbines and associated balance of plant
  • Successful record of project delivery in the renewable energy sector
  • Significant demonstrable technical experience in bioenergy and related subjects
  • Produce Technical Due Diligence reports and decarbonisation strategies.
  • Manage a team with the required skills and knowledge to undertake all aspects of bioenergy projects and support other parts of the business as required.
  • Deep understanding of quality management systems and processes, financial project management systems, business and commercial issues.
  • Assist the Practice Lead in recruiting to grow the team.
  • Mentor junior members of the team to achieve the required blend of skills and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Ability to source and develop new business opportunities.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of projects including programming, resourcing and monitoring.
  • Promote an ingrained culture of ‘right first time’ and ability to motivate juniors to achieve this. Proven ability in the leadership and motivation of individuals and teams
  • High personal credibility and professionalism within the business
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, ideally with experience in business development, project management and client management
  • Ability to speak fluently and communicate effectively in written reports and oral presentations
  • Flexibility, including the ability to travel throughout the UK and internationally.
