“Fund managers have accepted that ESG issues can be material to business performance and the value of their assets, and therefore are now seeking to benchmark and monitor performance using data analytics“.
Data Management is now a key part of the ESG management process
There are many variations on the adage that: “You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” Its central theme, however, is now a key part of thinking around best practice in environment, social and governance (ESG) management and reporting.
Having advanced from the acceptance of ‘good news’ case studies as the typical way of illustrating ESG performance, stakeholders are seeking to confirm that appropriate ESG data management plans have been put in place, built around key performance indicators and related targets.
Moreover, more fund managers, irrespective of what their stakeholders are requesting, have accepted that ESG issues can be material to the ESG performance, and therefore the value of their assets, and are seeking to benchmark and monitor performance.
For both, data is now a central requirement.
How Anthesis can support ESG data management plans
Across the full range of ESG issues, Anthesis is expert at benchmarking current performance and providing valuable data analytics such as calculating organisations’ carbon footprints. We help management teams and their owners by monitoring their performance and coaching them throughout the improvement process, to deliver against material key performance indicators and related ESG targets.
Collecting data, for example on energy use, staff diversity, turnover or numbers of cyber incidents, is now an essential part of the ESG data management process.
Anthesis can support this with hands-on assistance on the ground to help clients access and validate the required data and put in place web-based data collection systems such as the Footprinter solution to accelerate data collection and analysis. Such systems, for instance built on Anthesis’ Activator Hub model, can also be used as forums for data sharing and networking, for instance between a fund’s portfolio companies or assets.
Transparency and communication is central to ESG management
Support from Anthesis includes collating and communicating key data sets and narrative on performance to stakeholders. Clients are also supported with their reporting requirements, for instance through the UN Principles of Responsible Investment or as participants in the CDP, GRI or GRESB.
In addition, Anthesis has extensive experience of supporting clients to develop compelling sustainability reports and communications collateral for standalone ESG reports, helping them through the ESG improvement process.
I have worked with Anthesis for many years. They have a depth of ESG understanding and expertise, allowing real analysis and advice on the emerging issues that are becoming increasingly material to our clients. What sets them apart is their willingness and ability to apply this, together with technology solutions, to enhance the quality and speed of their reporting.
We wanted the ESG screen as we were keen to understand the definition of ESG and to see the criteria you would be using. We were also interested to see how others would view us through this lens. The Anthesis screen provided us a with a “mirror”. The value to Neste was that it confirmed we are on a right track to addressing ESG issues. It also helped us to identify some potential improvement opportunities, several of which we are working on, and others that warrant further evaluation.
We'd love to hear from you
