MSM Milling

Leveraging biofuels for emissions reduction and creating carbon credits

We supported MSM Milling to secure a $2.5M grant to switch fuel sources, saving 140,000 tCO2-e while also creating saleable carbon credits

MSM Milling is a fully integrated oilseed crushing and refining operation in Manildra, NSW. MSM Milling initially engaged Anthesis to assess the emissions reduction potential of switching fuel source to biomass. This involved replacing current LPG fuelled boilers with a 5 MW biomass fuelled boiler using locally sourced timber residue as a fuel source.

Anthesis researched and considered several funding options including Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) grants, Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) low-interest loans and Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) subsidies.

We subsequently assisted MSM Milling in securing an AUD2.5 million ARENA grant for an AUD5.4 million installation involving a fuel switch from an LPG-fired boiler array to a 5 MW renewable biomass wood waste boiler.

The successful outcome of the project has resulted in thousands of dollars of savings and will abate up to 140,000 tCO2-e over the project life. It also creates saleable carbon credits under the ERF.

The fuel switch project has since become a cornerstone demonstration project for the Australian agribusiness industry and has been recognised by Bioenergy Australia for demonstrating leadership and successfully advancing Australia’s bioenergy sector.
