CPG Sustainability

Sustainable Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Consulting

The CPG Sustainability Landscape

Companies in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry are increasingly seeing opportunities to capitalise on stakeholder interest in sustainability. On top of that, increasingly consumers are aligning personal values around social and environmental causes, with what they want to buy from companies and brands.

Robust environmental and social programs are important elements of corporate reputation and brand strength and are central to building trust with consumers and stakeholders alike. CPG brands that embed sustainability throughout their business to become purpose-driven and deliver more sustainable products have much to gain.

How are CPG brands tackling sustainability?

Through sustainable product design, CPG companies can respond to stakeholder interest while meeting higher standards being set by their retail partners without a product performance trade off. We are seeing new scalable and sustainable options hit the market that help companies to make their products more ‘circular’ and lower carbon–including bio-based, recycled and regenerative ingredients. These solutions require working with the supply chain, and optimising sustainable sourcing and logistics.

Sustainable plastics and packaging solutions offer another avenue for help brands achieve their goals around circularity and net zero targets among others. In addition, renewable energy, efficiency solutions and zero waste programs offer clear-cut cost savings opportunities in the short to medium-term.

Brands are also finding ways to drive a positive social impact, from improving the livelihoods of workers in their supply chains or in local communities, to supporting diversity and social justice initiatives within and beyond their workplaces, to designing more accessible products and embracing diversity with inclusive marketing campaigns.

We partnered with industry expert Anthesis to ensure we could meet the rigorous requirements of an SBTi-approved goal for Scope 3 emissions. With Anthesis’ guidance, we were able to footprint our current Scope 3 impact as well as model out all the underlying initiatives and activities that will help us achieve our 2030 target.
