The Situation
Anthesis was tasked with identifying and assessing actual and potential human rights risks within the agricultural feedstock value chain of an Indian company.
This involved evaluating the severity and likelihood of these risks, reviewing the findings of the Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) consultant, and guiding them on conducting site visits.
The goal was to rapidly assess relevant vulnerability indicators and recommend prioritised next steps for improvement.
Our Solutions
To address these tasks, Anthesis conducted comprehensive human rights due diligence in line with international frameworks on business, human rights, and the environment. Specifically, the assessment adhered to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG)’s Human Rights Due Diligence and the Environment (HRDD+E) guidance, and the IFC Performance Standards.
Using a proprietary risk assessment tool, Anthesis evaluated the risk level based on the severity of the risk to people or society and the likelihood of its manifestation within the sector and region, in line with the UNGPs framework.

Impacts of the Project
The human rights due diligence conducted by Anthesis provided a detailed understanding of the human rights risks within the feedstock value chain, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions.
By prioritising risks based on their severity and likelihood and guiding the ESDD consultant on effective site visit practices, Anthesis ensured that relevant vulnerability indicators were rapidly assessed. This led to the formulation of recommended actions and a prioritised next-steps procedure, ultimately contributing to the mitigation of human rights risks and promoting responsible business practices in the region.
