Strengthened Governance on Modern Slavery for UniLodge

The Situation

UniLodge offers student accommodation in Australia and New Zealand, providing safe, purpose-built housing options either on campus or close to major educational institutions like universities, colleges, and TAFE. They aim to create a supportive and secure environment for students.

However, the student accommodation industry, including providers like UniLodge, faces challenges related to modern slavery and human rights risks. These risks can arise from various points in the supply chain, such as construction, maintenance, and service provisions.

It’s crucial for organisations in this sector to implement robust policies and practices to mitigate these risks and ensure ethical operations.

Our Solutions

Anthesis partnered with UniLodge to strengthen its approach to modern slavery risk management and create a safer, more supportive environment for students.

We delivered a tailored work package that included:

  • Modern Slavery Statement Expert Review and Gap Assessment: Identifying compliance gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Statement Re-write: Updating language and structure to meet legislative requirements and reflect best practice.
  • Modern Slavery Training: Facilitated interactive sessions (in-person and virtual) to build awareness and capability across teams.

This comprehensive approach ensured UniLodge had the tools and knowledge to proactively manage risks and demonstrate leadership in ethical governance.

Impacts of the Project

With our support, UniLodge refreshed its Modern Slavery Statement, closing compliance gaps and identifying opportunities for improvement. They developed a new statement aligned with legislative requirements and best practice, and strengthened internal capability through targeted Modern Slavery training.

“The team at Anthesis were extremely pleasant to deal with from the very beginning. The team is very knowledgeable in the area of modern slavery and took the time to understand our operations and supply chain. They were patient, helpful, with outputs that exceeded expectation. It was great working with Anthesis and our business is much more knowledgeable and confident with our modern slavery obligations.”
