Uruguay Wind Power Project

Delivering clean, renewable electricity while supporting Uruguay’s low-carbon energy transition
wind energy carbon project in uruguay

The Uruguay Wind Power Project supports the generation of renewable electricity through onshore wind, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening energy security and economic development. By displacing fossil fuel-based power generation, the project contributes to Uruguay’s long-term transition towards a more sustainable, resilient and independent energy system.

Located in a region with exceptionally favourable wind conditions, the project harnesses Uruguay’s abundant natural resources to deliver reliable, low-emissions power to the national grid. In doing so, it supports national climate goals, reduces air pollution and creates skilled employment opportunities linked to the construction, operation and maintenance of wind infrastructure.

Project details

Uruguay is located within the “Roaring Forties” — a belt of strong, consistent westerly winds in the Southern Hemisphere between latitudes 40° and 50°. Combined with its relatively flat terrain and proximity to the Atlantic coast, these conditions allow wind to flow uninterrupted across the landscape, creating an ideal environment for wind power generation.

The project is located in the Flores Department in south-eastern Uruguay and comprises the construction and operation of 25 wind turbines, with a total installed capacity of 50 MW. Electricity generated by the wind farm is supplied directly to Uruguay’s national grid via an on-site substation, connected to the UTE Cerro Colorado substation and onward to the Trinidad UTE station through a 150 kV high-voltage transmission line.

The project represents a strong example of Uruguay’s commitment to renewable energy development and its broader strategy to prioritise democracy, sustainability and long-term economic resilience.

Collaborations

The project operates within Uruguay’s national energy framework and supports collaboration between renewable energy developers, grid operators and local supply chains. Through knowledge transfer and skills development, it contributes to building long-term capacity within Uruguay’s wind energy sector.

Quality criteria

All Anthesis-supported carbon removal projects undergo independent verification to confirm permanent carbon storage and measurable environmental benefits. Projects must demonstrate alignment with UN SDGs 12, 13, and 15, promote soil and ecosystem health, and deliver robust climate and nature outcomes.

  • Certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)
  • Clear additionality through renewable energy deployment replacing fossil fuel-based generation
  • Robust monitoring, reporting and verification of emissions reductions
  • Alignment with national renewable energy and climate strategies
  • Transparent grid connection and electricity dispatch arrangements
  • Delivery of measurable environmental and socio-economic co-benefits

Through rigorous auditing, monitoring, and adherence to international standards, Anthesis ensures all projects provide credible, lasting impact for both climate and local communities.
