KUBO Ultra-Clima® Greenhouse

KUBO Ultra-Clima® Greenhouse: ISO-Verified 25% Carbon Footprint Reduction in Tomato Cultivation

Situation

KUBO Group is a global leader in innovative, high-tech greenhouse solutions for sustainable horticulture.

KUBO’s mission is to enable sustainable, future-proof horticulture by combining innovation, technology, and sustainability. While the company’s Ultra-Clima® greenhouse technology had shown promising environmental performance, the horticulture sector increasingly demands independent, internationally recognised verification of climate impact – both to substantiate environmental claims and to support growers and retailers in achieving their net zero targets.

KUBO required:

  • Independent, ISO-compliant assessment of CO₂ emissions in tomato cultivation using Ultra-Clima® technology.
  • Verification of results to ISO-14067 standards.
  • Comparative insights against conventional greenhouse systems and national benchmarks.

Solution

Anthesis partnered with KUBO to provide rigorous, science-based verification of the Ultra-Clima® greenhouse’s carbon footprint.

Our approach included:

  1. Independent Comparative Study – Validating results from research at KUBO’s BlueLab test centre, comparing Ultra-Clima® against a traditional Venlo greenhouse in the Netherlands.
  2. ISO-14067 Verification – Preparing and managing the official verification process to confirm the reliability of carbon footprint calculations.
  3. National Benchmark Analysis – Conducting a desktop study comparing Ultra-Clima® tomato cultivation to average Dutch tomato production footprints (KWIN data, Wageningen University & Research).

The studies delivered clear, independently verified evidence of Ultra-Clima®’s sustainability benefits:

  • 25.4% lower CO₂ footprint in tomato production (0.949 kg CO₂e/kg tomatoes) compared to traditional Venlo greenhouses (1.272 kg CO₂e/kg tomatoes).
  • Energy use reduction of up to 18.5%, lowering operational costs and emissions.
  • Significant water and crop protection savings, supporting food safety and environmental goals.
  • Resilience to extreme weather through semi-closed design and advanced climate control.
  • Proven performance below national average emissions for tomato cultivation in the Netherlands.
  • Thanks to the Ultra-Clima® technology, 92% less CO₂ is dosed – usually applied to make greenhouse crops grow faster – compared to conventional greenhouses.

These results enable KUBO and its grower customers to make credible climate claims, strengthen their market positioning, and support supply chain partners in meeting sustainability targets.

With Anthesis’ verification, we have robust, independent proof of Ultra-Clima®’s environmental benefits — turning our sustainability vision into verified reality.

Impact of the Project

This project demonstrates how targeted technological innovation, backed by robust verification, can deliver measurable climate and nature benefits:

  • Climate impact – Reduced greenhouse gas emissions and potential for climate-positive cultivation.
  • Nature protection – Lower water use, reduced chemical inputs, and improved biodiversity potential in horticultural systems.
  • Supply chain leadership – Helping the agri-food sector progress towards net zero through verifiable, science-based action.

Beyond tomatoes, the Ultra-Clima® model shows strong potential for other crops, including peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, and leafy greens — with further studies planned.
