Offsetting Carbon Emissions through High-Quality Projects

The Situation

Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB), a leading global property and construction consultancy, is committed to achieving net zero by 2030, excluding supply chain emissions. Recognising that some emissions are currently unavoidable, RLB developed a carbon offsetting strategy aligned to the Oxford Offsetting Principles. The strategy focuses on addressing residual emissions in a credible and future-fit way, while supporting environmental regeneration and social development.

To ensure high integrity, RLB only invests in carbon credits from Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) projects that deliver measurable contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The company also sought to increase the share of carbon removals in its portfolio over time, in line with evolving best practices.

To help guide this work, RLB partnered with Anthesis, a world-leading sustainability consultancy with expertise in carbon markets, to identify and source projects aligned with its values and climate targets.

Our Solution

Working together, RLB and Anthesis selected two high-impact carbon projects that reflect RLB’s ambition to go beyond emissions reduction and deliver co-benefits for people and nature:

Biochar Project—United States

This project involves the use of pyrolysis plants to convert biomass into high-quality engineered biochar, a stable form of carbon that can be permanently stored in soils. As a carbon removal technology, biochar both locks away CO₂ and enhances soil health, water retention, and agricultural productivity.

  • Covers: RLB’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions
  • SDGs supported: 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production; 13 – Climate Action; 15 – Life on Land

Reforestation Project—Tanzania

This community-led initiative restores degraded land in southwest Tanzania through sustainable reforestation practices. It supports biodiversity, improves ecosystem services such as water and soil quality, and enhances livelihoods through employment, carbon income, and infrastructure investment.

  • Covers: Emissions from international flights, rail and taxi journeys, and hotel stays
  • SDGs supported: 1 – No Poverty; 4 – Quality Education; 5 – Gender Equality; 8 – Decent Work; 13 – Climate Action; 15 – Life on Land.

Sustainability is embedded in our business strategy and culture, and we are proud to be taking action through credible, high-impact carbon projects. Partnering with Anthesis has enabled us to align our offsetting with global best practices, while supporting communities and ecosystems in a meaningful way.
