Scaling Nature-Based Solutions in Europe with a Global Conservation NGO

The situation

Our client, a leading international conservation NGO, was developing a first-of-its-kind blended finance facility to scale nature-based solutions across European landscapes. Despite strong ambition, systemic barriers — including a lack of investable projects, fragmented initiatives, and gaps in project development support — limited private capital flows into this space. The client sought Anthesis’ expertise to define a clear strategy for the facility and build a fundraising approach to mobilise private capital at scale.

Our solution

Anthesis mapped the current landscape of nature-based solutions, identifying key players, barriers, and opportunities. Building on this, we developed a strategy that articulated the client’s ambition and outlined how they could convene stakeholders to catalyse investment. We then designed an outcomes-led fundraising strategy linking the financial, strategic and impact value of nature-based solutions to relevant sources of capital, while hypothesising funder motivations and preferred instruments.

To ground the strategy, we conducted detailed assessments of three European landscapes, mapping investment opportunities to different funder groups and expected outcomes.
