VELDO Mersin Biochar Carbon Removal Project

Converting sustainable biomass waste streams into durable biochar for long-term carbon storage.
Veldo facility Turkey

The VELDO Mersin Biochar Production Facility is an industrial-scale biochar carbon removal project in Türkiye. The facility converts sustainable biomass waste streams from several sources into durable biochar for long-term carbon storage. The biochar produced is distributed directly to local farmers to improve soil health and agricultural productivity.

Project type: Carbon Removal – Biochar

Biochar is an extremely carbon-rich charcoal-like material intended for environmental benefit application to the soil. Once incorporated into the soil, it becomes recalcitrant, or resistant to degradation. It cannot easily be decomposed or demineralised, as opposed to adding organic compost to the soil. It can be made from various types of biomass, and depending on the specific biomass, the carbon levels in biochar usually range from 50% to 80%.

SDG 13 - Climate Action
SDG 15 - Life on Land

This project contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, delivering measurable environmental and social outcomes.

Project details

Developed by VELDO and supported by Anthesis as the carbon project developer, the project represents one of the first large-scale, high-integrity biochar carbon removal facilities in Türkiye. It combines permanent carbon storage with on-site renewable energy recovery.

The project is being developed under the Puro Biochar Methodology, with operations having commenced in Q1 2026. It is expected to receive its first credit issuance in Q3 2026 and reach full capacity by Q4 2026.

Project impact

The VELDO project is located within a designated agro-industrial zone.

In addition to delivering permanent carbon removal, the VELDO project provides a range of environmental and local co-benefits through its integrated design. Agricultural and food-processing residues are converted into durable biochar through a controlled industrial process, supporting circular resource use and reducing reliance on disposal or low-value applications.

When applied to agricultural soils, biochar contributes to improved soil structure, water retention, and nutrient efficiency, supporting long-term soil productivity. At the same time, recovery of process gases to generate renewable electricity improves overall system efficiency, delivering additional climate and resource benefits alongside durable carbon storage.

Collaborations

Anthesis supports this project through investment in engineered carbon removal credits. Removal projects, such as biochar, extract carbon directly from the atmosphere, complementing emission reduction initiatives and advancing global climate goals.

This project is Puro.earth certified, a Finnish standard focused on carbon removal methodologies, ensuring credibility, transparency, and measurable climate impact. Anthesis encourages clients to prioritise high-quality removal projects that deliver verified, long-term carbon sequestration and nature-positive outcomes.

Quality criteria

All Anthesis-supported carbon removal projects undergo independent verification to confirm permanent carbon storage and measurable environmental benefits.

Through rigorous auditing, monitoring, and adherence to international standards, Anthesis ensures all projects provide credible, lasting impact for both climate and local communities.
